For further information visit our website www.isea2013.org.
————————————————————

Central to ISEA2013 is a thought-provoking program of artists’ presentations, creative dialogues and critical debates that will unearth the latest thinking and ideas in contemporary culture. The 3-day ISEA2013 Conference will feature over 220 speakers, 8 keynote addresses from global leaders in the fields of art, science, technology, media and communications. Topics will explore a range of cultural forms including bio-art, data visualisation, robotics, augmented realities and urban and virtual ecologies. The conference will be held from Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 June at The University of Sydney.

Special guest Julian Assange will present a Keynote speech at the ISEA2103 Conference at the University of Sydney on Thursday 13 June 2013 at 5.30pm. The WikiLeaks founder will address the conference via live video link from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

The Opening Keynote will be given by New York based Michael Naimark , renowned pioneer media artist and guest curator of the 25th Anniversary Ars Electronica. Professor Brian Rogerswill discuss “Perception, Art and Illusion” in his conference keynote address.

The ISEA2013 Talks Program in collaboration with Vivid Ideas will inspire new thinking and creative paradigms through provocative speakers such as Italian media critics and hacktivists Alessandro Ludovico , whose infamous online project Face to Facebook involved stealing 1 million Facebook profiles, filtering them with face-recognition software, and posting them on a custom-made dating website. Mark Hosler of Negativland will be giving a storytelling and film presentation titled, Adventures In Illegal Art: Creative Media Resistance, Negativland, and the Fight To Not Be Absorbed”, Stelarc will present “Meat, Metal & Code: Engineering Aliveness & Affect” as well as a keynote presentation from Genevieve Bell
, Intel Fellow.

ISEA2013 is proud to present a series of artist panel talks at the MCA as part of our collaboration with Vivid Ideas. We have selected artists from the ISEA2013 and Vivid exhibition programs to come together on a range key thematic topics to discuss the role artists play in creatively investigating the possibilities and pushing the limits of new (and old) technologies. Join us to see how artworks help us to imaginatively experience and critically reflect on the role technologies are set to play in life, art, culture and communication in the 21st century.

Also released are a number of workshops where you have the opportunity to get hands on and play with new techniques and technologies. These are available for booking through the registration system, but all of these events have limited numbers and most are free to ISEA2013 registered delegates , some of these are available to non-delegates so look at what’s on offer and book your places now!

If you have already registered, please revisit your registration (http://isea2013.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d0829be2e2adaed4974b29507&id=e9f33c7531&e=9b8f87cccf) and add events to your agenda, all you need is your registration reference number.

Darwin and Sydney will be connected through The Portals
&id=57aa3a38ef&e=9b8f87cccf) , a curated program of five telematic artworks
distributed across these two cities. As large screens proliferate in our
environment can we imagine a different way of using these resources aside
from broadcasting TV? This project connects the extensive urban
infrastructure of The Concourse in Sydney’s Chatswood with communities in
Darwin in real time across two large public screens through networked and
interactive artworks, via high speed broadband. The Portals includes live
art, visual art, e-literature, interactive performance, sound art and
community engagement.

Other exhibitions will showcase the diversity of electronic art practice
including the week-long collaborative production of an expanded Durational
Book being created at the State Library of NSW by 6 artists, including Chris
Caines and Megan Heyward, the meeting of electronic art and architecture at
the Tin Sheds Gallery, a sound art exhibition at UTS Gallery, experiments in
cinema at COFA-UNSW¹s iCinema and an exploration of place and representation
at COFA¹s Kudos Gallery, with the interactive installation Point of View,
combining two radically different environments: the Tasmanian wilderness and
the extreme urban development of Hong Kong. In an apparently endless
stereoscopic 3D giga-pixel panoramic montage, the two locations merge
seamlessly from one into another as the observer turns the circular Œscreen¹
to control both the viewpoint and the related soundscape.

ISEA2013 will feature two programs of sound art performances: Macrophonics
II by Donna Hewitt, Julian Knowles, Wade Marynowsky, and dancers, presented
in association with UTS; and Polysonics, with performances by Michaela
Davies, Ian Andrews, Garry Bradbury, Shane Fahey, Evan Carr, David Carr,
Hamish Stuart, Leah Barclay, Garth Paine at ABC, Studio 22.

The second of three program announcements includes the MCA, COFA, UNSW, Carriageworks, Performance Space, Artspace, Customs House and the Seymour Centre as well as roving locations throughout the city.

The ISEA2013 EXHIBITIONS PROGRAM, will showcase the works of over 150 innovative artists from Australia and around the world. In partnership with Carriageworks, ISEA2013 presents Alex Davies (Australia) Very Near Future large scale mixed reality / interactive cinema installation which will question what is real or virtual, fact or fiction. In partnership with Performance Space, Body Fluid II (Redux) by John A Douglas (Australia) a performance and video installation in which the artist presents the monotony of his daily dialysis treatment as a sublime act of self-transformation.

Artspace presents in association with ISEA 2013 an exhibition featuring Mari Velonaki(Australia), Petra Gemeinboeck & Rob Saunders (Australia) and Simon Ingram (New Zealand). The Media Facade Exhibition curated by M. Hank Haeusler & Martin Tomitsch at Customs House showcases six seminal media façades through large light posters and moving images as well as a selection of new media façade projects from around the world. The exhibition is organised by the Media Architecture Institute and Customs House in collaboration with Vivid Sydney and ISEA2013.

The ISEA2013 TALKS PROGRAM in collaboration with Vivid Ideas will inspire new thinking and creative paradigms through provocative speakers including program highlight - Stelarc (Australia) presented by ISEA2013 and MCA, in partnership with the National Institute for Experimental Arts at COFA, UNSW. ISEA2013 proudly collaborating with Vivid Sydney presents Mark Hosler, Negativland (US), Fee Plumley (UK/Australia), Kate Chapman (USA), Genevieve Bell, Director of Interaction and Experience at Intel Labs (Australia/US) and ISEA2013 Keynote by Brian Rogers on Perception, Art & Illusion (UK).

Roving interactions with Touchy known as the human camera will happen across the city. Hong Kong / Tokyo based artist Eric Siu uses photos or ‘Touch-Snaps’ to remind us of the ephemeral richness of togetherness, and challenge the disembodying nature of social media, which dehumanises physical contact.
“I am a human camera. If you touch me, my shutters open and I take a photo!”
Touchy

Prepare for citywide disruption as Australia’s notorious tactical media art group pvi collective (Australia) takes over the streets of Darlinghurst during Deviator, presented by ISEA 2013, Performance Space and National Art School. During the twilight hours, immerse yourself in an outdoor game experience and become an urban ‘deviator’, temporarily transforming the city into a playground.

Stereopublic (Crowdsourcing the Quiet), an attempt to both promote ‘sonic health’ in our cities and offer a public guide for those who crave a retreat from crowds, is coming to Sydney. It will recruit members of the public as ‘earwitnesses’. Sound artist Jason Sweeney will then create an individual quiet sound piece for you and your location, sending it back to you in exchange for your participation. Once this exchange is complete, your city-specific location will be placed on an ever-growing virtual soundmap of Sydney.

The City Data Slam, run by creative producers at Carbon Arts, will bring together leading national and international data art practitioners to jam with Sydney’s sustainability data over the last weekend of ISEA 2013 in Object Gallery’s new workshop space, designed by ARUP’s urban informatics group.

Join dLux MediaArts and Dorkbot as part of ISEA2013 for Art Hackfest, an open-source hackfest that creates an environment for new artistic experiences and collaborations over two days. During this event artists, designers, techies and more will come together in Sydney and in the satellite locations of Darwin and Byron Bay to explore the participatory nature of technology and art.

Call for Papers & Participation

ISEA2014 DUBAI NOVEMBER 2014

Zayed University’s College of Arts and Creative Enterprises has been chosen to host the prestigious International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) in the fall of 2014.

ISEA is one of the most important international academic arts/technology event for the interdisciplinary discussion and showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in art, interactive, electronic and digital media. It’s an event that annually brings together artists, academics, scientists, and new media practitioners. The symposium consists of three aspects of peer reviewed conference, internationally juried exhibitions, and various in-conjunction and other partner events—from video screenings to performances.

Dubai is a location with exquisite contradictions.

For presenters and attendees of ISEA2014, it will be an experience like no other. Dubai is a location surrounded by massive change—socially and politically.

Dubai offers a platform for its neighbors in the Middle East and South Asia (MENASA region) to come and share not only their research, but to have access to the wide range of ideas that ISEA2014 brings with its symposium.

ISEA2014 participants from beyond the MENASA region will have the opportunity to engage with an audience outside of their usual practice within a framework of conceptual relevance both in and outside of the Middle East.

Join us for complex conversations around the theme Location. Lectures, workshops, panel discussions, exhibitions, keynote presentations, and more will create a vibration in Dubai sure to be felt around the globe.

BUILDING UP TO ISEA2014

Beginning in 2013 there will be an ongoing program of events organized throughout the UAE leading up to ISEA2014. Zayed University will host a series of workshops, both in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, that introduce the ZU community and the broader UAE community to the breadth of electronic media artworks as well as cutting edge and innovative technologies in the context of art making, sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation. It will present EMERGE II: Radiating Ports, an exhibition of faculty and student collaborative works developed from a workshop given by Italian video artist Fabrizio Plessi. New media artist Myfanwy Ashmore will be working with students in “The Mouse Hack Workshop”, where results will be showcased at SIKKA (www.sikka.ae) in the ISEA2014 exhibition house in March. Artist Juliana Espana Keller will be working with students on a digital video project, and will also establish WWKA Dubai (Women With Kitchen Appliances), with a performance expected at thejamjar Dubai in late May.

There will also be several artists in residency opportunities available to provide international artists an immersive creative experience in the United Arab Emirates.

Please visit www.isea2014.org for complete guidelines, submission information, partners, events, and more.

FORMATS

1. Site Responsive & Specific/Unique Sessions

Dubai is a diverse city with a wide range of interesting sites that could be used for presentations and sessions outside of the conference venues. ISEA2014 will confirm specific sites for use by June 2014 for your consideration, but other locations can be proposed and examined. Site examples include abras, parks, desert dunes, creekside, malls, the beach, and more. Please propose your concept and the ISEA2014 committee will work with you to locate an appropriate site.

2. Roundtables

Please propose an idea to begin a conversation for a roundtable discussion. These are opportunities for the participants to get together in an informal setting and examine critical issues within their disciplines. There is no formal agenda, however a topic will be assigned as a starting point and the session will be lead by a “facilitator.” We will accept ideas for full session topics. If your idea is chosen you will act as the facilitator for this session. We will provide you with guidelines to assist in the facilitation process.

3. Workshops

These sessions are best suited for teaching or demonstrating particular procedures, skills, or techniques. Session content may include: hands-on demonstrations, presentations of a technology or technique, or an extended dialogue with participants. Workshops will be structured to provide ample time for interaction, participation, and involvement. Workshop conveners should submit a formal description of the proposed workshop along with a list of required resources.

4. Panels

1
Panel discussion proposals are to be submitted by the participant panel chair. Panel sessions as determined by the panel chair in their proposal, should include 3-6 presenting participants. Panel sessions should be proposed on a shared theme (the abstract) and with all participants pre-selected by the panel chair. The format for presentation is entirely up to the organizing panel chair.

2
Please submit your abstract for consideration by the ISEA2014 committee for a presentation within a panel discussion. The committee will place individuals in panel discussion by themes submitted.

5. Peer Reviewed Paper Sessions

These sessions are best suited for scholarly work and reports on current or completed research. Authors present summaries or overviews of their work, describing the essential features (related to purpose, procedures, outcomes, or product). Presentations will be grouped according to topic or perspective, with time provided after all of the presentations for Q&A and group discussion between Authors and other paper session attendees. Presenters are welcome, and highly encouraged, to include any visual support to assist delivery of their oral presentation. The time allotted will be in relation to the number of presenters in each session, but it is recommended that papers are within a 30-45 minute timeframe.

Individual abstracts will be accepted. Authors who would like to chair a session related to the theme of their research will also be considered.

6. Paper Presentation/Lecture (this could be off site)

A certain number of papers will be selected for 60 minute dedicated presentations. Those submitting papers will have the option of placing their paper into consideration for this type of presentation. These presentations will ideally be reserved for engaging summaries of completed research or the presentation of novel ideas that need a dedicated session.

7. Location Extrapolation

The ISEA2014 Dubai symposium is extremely excited to connect to cities, towns, villages, classrooms, labs, apartments, and other locations that cannot be transported physically to the United Arab Emirates. With the theme “location,” the planning committee is looking at bridging as many places as possible. Various collaborations that lead-up to ISEA2014, throughout, and following the event will be considered. The technical format and platforms used to carry out these sessions need to be easily available and robust enough to function in the symposium settings. However—other than live video streaming—recorded, texting, tweeting, classroom interactions, and other suggestions can be considered.

8. Arabian Nights

Arabian Nights will be an evening of campfire dialogues and projection in the Sharjah desert at Fossil Rock. Presentations will be projected on the dunes and rocks while presenters take their turn with a short dialogue/verbal presentation. Think of this session as a panel discussion under the stars with the addition of projection on the dunes. Transportation will be provided to and from Fossil Rock (approx. 35 minutes from Dubai).

9. PechaKucha Night

PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, including Dubai.

PechaKucha 20×20 is a simple presentation format where you show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. During ISEA2014, symposium partners will be hosting 2 PechaKucha events (1 for students and 1 for professionals).

Please submit your idea for these events and clarify if you are a student or professional.

10. Poster Island

Abstracts can be submitted for Poster Island during ISEA2014. This will include both physical and online posters that present your original research. The posters could include text, graphics, and animations (for online PDF’s). Please consider the difference of audience within physical, public spaces (university conference setting) versus online space.

Please design the printed poster no larger than 3 feet width x 6 feet height. They must include the title of the research, the presenter’s name(s) along with the necessary explanatory content.

Online posters must be provided in PDF format.

• Please use the following link to upload your proposals: www.isea2014.org.
• Submit a 300 word abstract proposal.
• Please take the below sub-themes into consideration and feel free to think beyond them under the overarching theme of Location.
• Deadline for submissions: September 30, 2013.
• Projected Date of Notification of Acceptance: December 1, 2013.
• Please see the open call form for details. Please submit your proposal online at: isea2014.org/submit.

CONFERENCE THEME

Location
We ask that you consider the ISEA2014 theme and sub-themes outlined below. You will be required to allocate your proposal to one of these eight sub-themes on submission:

Theme – ‘Location’

Dubai is a location with exquisite contradictions. Its location not only provides a place with world- renowned architecture, but also boasts its development along the waters, its original trading ground. For presenters and attendees of ISEA, it will be an experience like no other. Dubai is in a location, where everything around it is going through massive change—socially and politically.

CONFERENCE SUBTHEMES

1. SPECULATIVE MEDIATIONS

The media plays a primary role in our perceptions of the world around us. It can be argued that in some ways the media helps to create the world around us. What is our role as new media artists and manipulators? How do we engage in the world around us through the media? How do we move beyond speculations and get to truth? Should we disclaim our personal bias within our work? If so, how?

2. TECHNOLOGY, SCIENCE, & ART: EAST MEETS WEST

From the very zero that makes possible the binary data that the information age is built upon to the recursive geometries of Arabesque patterns, the long history of mathematical, scientific, and artistic contributions from the Arab world is well known. Within the context of the current state of geopolitical flux, speculation is solicited with regard to the contemporary and future balance of technological progress between East and West and the prospects for trans-global cooperation and project collaboration.

3. EMERGING ECONOMIES / EMERGING IDENTITIES

Dubai has been the emerging economy to watch over the past 15 years. Both the unprecedented triumphs and dramatic overreaches have played a role in shaping identity, and in many ways the reverse is also true. How has the course of emerging economies like Dubai’s at the turn of the 21st century played into the identity of the developed world and in the world that has yet to emerge? In what way has this influenced the work of artists?

4. NOMADIC SHIFTS

The rich history and cultural identity of the Emirati people is closely tied to nomadic lifestyle. Microclimate, geography, and biology of the region are the generative cause of the nomadic life of the Bedouin. Today, the idea of the nomad has taken on a multitude of diverse connotations with new generative causes. How do these new notions of nomadic existence affect the practice of new media art?

5. DIGITAL ARCHAEOLOGY & COLLABORATIVE SPACES

Digital tools and applications are being used to recreate lost communities and to better understand spatial and cultural histories. In architecture and planning, virtual worlds create the opportunity to push the boundaries of materials and concepts (chaos, uncertainty, responsive environments)—that may or may not be realized. How does this practice impact the evolution of social systems? How has this practice influenced education and collaborations across disciplines?

6. INTERLACING WORLDS – FIBRES & SENSORY MEDIATION

Trading states along the Silk Road, by their nature as wealthy cross-cultural meeting points, played a catalytic role in advancing the evolution of luxury or exotic goods. In Nomadic societies, fabrics—whether for clothing or housing—were developed from products in their surrounding environments. Today, technology has advanced to allow fibers and fabrics to engage upon our senses through optics and feedback response. This theme explores the rich history of, and the future possibilities for the influence of textile and related materials by digital technology.

7. NOMADIC HIGHWAY / BRIDGING MEDIA

Social networks have played a pivotal role in the success of the Arab Spring. The Internet and other digital media are indispensable in the effort to illuminate and advance the public discourse on complex social themes and political systems (take for example Ahmed Basiony’s “30 Days of Running in the Place” documenting his demonstration of running alongside his footage of the Egyptian revolution prior to his murder). This theme aims to provide a forum for the exploration of the future of social media in art and its potential influence on the evolution of social ecologies.

8. CONNECTING WORLDS / LINKING IDEAS

As professors try to provide a better learning platform for students, to diversify their subject matter and engage interdisciplinary platforms, this theme focuses on the connection between art and science in the classroom.

ISEA International, founded in The Netherlands in 1990, fosters interdisciplinary exchange among culturally diverse organisations and individuals working with art, science and technology. Last seen in Sydney in 1992, the annual International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) returns 21 years later to deliver another ground-breaking event.

In that time, digital art has moved from the margins to become part of the fabric of everyday life. At once ubiquitous and unnoticed, resistance to electronic art has proven futile — it now lies embedded in the heart of our contemporary cultures. The symposium events will infuse the city’s social, digital and physical infrastructure.

A highlight of the program is the Australian premiere of test pattern, a stunning large-scale immersive installation by renowned Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda. Carriageworks and ISEA2013, proudly collaborating with Vivid Sydney, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest celebration of light, music and ideas, co-present test pattern at Carriageworks from 8 June until 1 July 2013. Like many of Ikeda’s electrifying works, test pattern represents the intense energies of the massive data flows that increasingly shape our globalised world.

The ISEA Board is pleased to announce that ISEA2015 the 21st International Symposium on Electronic Art will be held in Vancouver, Canada.

ISEA2015 has been awarded to Simon Fraser University in a bid led by Prof. Diane Gromala who holds a Canada Research Chair and teaches in Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) multidisciplinary School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT).

The Vancouver team presented their proposal at ISEA2012 in Albuquerque in a very competitive round alongside proposals from the Netherlands, Mexico and Indonesia. The ISEA Board was impressed with the proposal’s developments since its original presentation at ISEA2011. Improvements included a stronger positioning of ISEA2015 within Vancouver’s local culture while maintaining an international perspective.

With the theme ‘Raw and the Cooked’ the symposium fill have the following focus:

“As one of the most “green” cities on the planet, Vancouver’s inhabitants are committed to the struggle of re-visioning human relationships. Our conference will expand these human relations to non-humans—creatures, technology, art, etc.—that have the potential to alter the relations in their collectivity through processes of individuation and transduction, among others. The theme is meant not to bring us back to culture wars, but to provoke conversations about the impact of cultural practices on the technologies we make and use. Too often, technology is viewed in simple paradigms of so-called Western or industrialized nations vs. under-developed nations, yet the relevance of such a dichotomy fades daily. Instead, we hope to generate open discussions on the intertwining of culture and technology.”

The development and the implementation of ISEA2015 will be managed through Simon Fraser University’s School of International Arts & Technology with the team of: Symposium Directors – Diane Gromala, Philippe Pasquier, Thecla Schiphorst Artistic Directors – Malcolm Levy, Kate Armstrong

With an academic conference, accompanied by a program of exhibitions, performances and workshops, ISEA2015 will be an international gathering of leading and emerging thinkers and practitioners working at the interface of art and technology to be held in July/August 2015.

This is the second time ISEA will be held in Canada with ISEA1995 being staged in Montreal.

For further details please contact ISEA Director Sue Gollifer at info@isea-web.org or www.isea-web.org

Electronic Art – Resistance is Futile

The cutting edge of digital art has moved from the margins to become part of the fabric of everyday life. At once ubiquitous and unnoticed, resistance to electronic art has proven futile — it now lies embedded in the heart of our contemporary cultures. ISEA2013 will bleed through Sydney, from the margin to the core. More than a series of exhibitions (although that will be part of it), the symposium events will infuse the city’s social, digital and physical infrastructure. ISEA2013 aims to create a fluid body of thought, culture, community, industry, science and technology.

20th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2014)
to be staged for the first time in the Middle East
Zayed University, Dubai is selected to host ISEA201
The ISEA Board is pleased to announce that the 20th International Symposium on Electronic
Art will be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in November 2014. ISEA2014 will be hosted by
Zayed University in collaboration with the Dubai Convention Bureau and will engage with a
range of cultural and creative partners in the Middle East.
The Board received two very strong proposals for ISEA2014 from Zayed University, Dubai, UAE
and Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC. Following public presentations by both bids at
ISEA2011 in Istanbul and a final bid process, the ISEA Board agreed that that the Dubai bid, with
its focus on the burgeoning field of art and technology in the Arab World would provide a
unique opportunity for ISEA to connect audiences and artists from the Middle East with the
international electronic art community.
