Participating institutions include:University of Minnesota School of Music, the Walker Art Center, andthe Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This Minneapolis symposium addresses current research, theory andpractice related to art and electronics, with an emphasis on "the artfactor". The term "art" applies broadly to forms that address sound, image, word and body either specifically or as intermedia. Thisincludes works by visual artists, performers, musicians, and artistsdeveloping new electronic formats.Artists, scientists, arts critics, curators, educators, and othersinterested in the use of electronics in the arts are encouraged toparticipate. Beginning in 1993 this biennial series, first held inUtrecht in 1988, becomes an annual event bringing together expertsfrom the worlds of art, science and technology. This 1993 symposium will focus on artistic procedures and informationprocessing by artists. This includes technical procedures, relatedresearch, and aesthetic/critical assessment of such art. Panelists andspeakers are encouraged to illustrate presentations with "works ofart". Practicing artists, who use electronic technologies, will bewelcomed to address procedures and applications. The symposium alsoseeks to stimulate dialogue on arts criticism and foster an informedcritique of "the art factor" in the artist/machine dialectic.Deadlines, 1993: Workshops, Tutorials, Papers, Panels: April 15;Performance/Concert: May 15; Art Show, Electronic Theater: June 15;Slide Show, Listening Room: July 15.For submission guidelines address: FISEA 93, Mpls College of Art &Design, 2501 Stevens Ave S, Mpls, MN 55404, USA. An art gallery in Paris seems interested, andseveral artists, including Masaki Fujihata, are ready to participate. Thepurpose of the exhibition is to make the project for the InternationalComputer Sculpture Atelier more widely known, especially to potentialsponsors.Purpose of the Computer Sculpture Atelier:In this Atelier, artists will be able to produce sculptures on com-puter-controlled machines. Graphic artists could add a third dimension totheir works, sculptors could experiment with a new tool and students couldbe trained. This symbiosis of Science, Industry and Art may be of universal interest, since apparently only a few experiments of this kind have been carriedout. Therefore the Atelier could provide a prestigious showcase formanufacturers' most recent equipment.Various techniques may be used, such as milling, loviformage (coilformingby welding), stereolithography, joining or stacking of plates cut out withtools such as lasers or water jets.Current status of the Atelier project: Artists in several countries andschools are already interested. A technical school near Paris, which hasproduced several sculptures for the originator of the project, is willingto produce the Atelier if funds are provided. More potential participants,as well as sponsors willing to donate funds or equipment, are still beingsought.Artists who have produced computer sculptures or who intend to producesome in 1992 and are interested in participating in the exhibition areencouraged to contact:Alexandre Vitkine66, rue d'Auguesseau92100 Boulogne, France-------------------------------------------------------------------------CALL FOR PAPERSMichael Benedikt******************* A n n o u n c e m e n t *************** a n d -------- CALL FOR PROPOSALS, ABSTRACTS, AND PAPERS --------- 3 C Y B E R C O N F THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CYBERSPACE MAY 14 and 15, 1993 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN**********************************************************************The Third Conference on Cyberspace will be held May 14 and 15, 1993 atThe University of Texas at Austin.
